Crochet granny square top pattern

Halter top free pattern

Crochet Granny square top

This crochet granny square top is easy and quick to crochet. The pattern is a great way to use up leftover yarn and create a simple, but stylish, granny square crochet boho top. It is the perfect size for wearing both indoor and outdoor with adjustable straps for comfier either with a cardigan, blazer or any other kind of layering piece you could want to layer it with on top or just itself only.

The top is worked by first starting with granny squares separate, then join granny squares together then straps separate. In case you would want to make your granny squares bigger then add more rounds and vice versa for smaller granny squares, depending on the top size you want especially in terms of burs size, as the pattern is written for size small but its size inclusive.

Pattern Notes:

  •  Granny squares are worked in rounds, with round 1-3 done with the same yarn color and round 4 ith its different color then the joining and straps with different yarn color
  • All yarns must have the same thickness and of the same type
  • Always slp st on top of the first st to join, ch 1 to close at the end of every round before you cut off the yarn
  • Make slp knts before you start every round with a different yarn color
  • At the beginning of round 4 start in any st/ space, except the last st where you’ve joined your previous round to avoid messy work
  • Always work in your yarn tails as you go, to avoid having lots of yarn tails hanging
  • Always mark your first st (beginning of every round) to keep track of your work
  • You can use as many yarn colors you want or have at hand
  • Make sure each granny square has 4 rounds, excluding the joining round
  • You must have a total of 5 granny squares
  • All  granny squares must be equal in sizes with the same measurements and number of rounds
  • Each corner must have a total of 6 dc sts with ch 2 between the first 3 dc sts and the second 3 dc sts
  • Have 3 sets of 3 dc sts between corners/ from corner to corner
  • 3 dc cluster – 3 dc in the same st/space
  • This pattern I have used crochet as you go as a joining method, but if you can’t be able to join

your granny squares together like that (with the mentioned joining  method), you can simply add one more extra round to all granny squares, so that you can join them with a yarn needle or hook by either slp st or with sc sts

  • Make sure all  granny squares are facing the same side before joining them together
  • When joining with either a crochet hook or yarn needle make sure you are grabbing both loops
  • Each strap must be attached to its shoulder corner separate
  • Both straps must be attached in the same way
  • Granny square number 1 and 4 must cover your boobs (upper body), number 3 must cover your tummy (navel), and number 2 and 5 must cover your ribs.
  • Dressing tip: Criss cross your straps from shoulders and insert them into circled corners for granny square number 2 and 5 for them to be tied at the back
  • Granny square numbers are written with the red pen, joining letters for indicating which side to go next are written with a green pen

  • Without cutting off the yarn
  • Take the second granny square,
  • Dc into one of the second granny square corner
  • (Yarn over, insert the crochet hook into that second granny square’s corner and complete the first dc st)
  • Remove the crochet hook
  • Insert it in the next st on the first granny square to slp st by pulling the left open (hanging) loop
  • Make 2 more dc in the second granny square to complete the dc st cluster by repeating the same procedure you have done to complete the first dc
  •  Keep leaving that open (hanging) loop before you insert the hook into the next st on the first granny square,
  • Until you have completed the first 3 dc clusters
  • Or until you have reached the second corner of the second granny square
  • Make dc clusters then take the third granny square
  • Attach it to that second granny square’s corner
  • Continue attaching it to the first granny square until you reached the second corner
  • Follow letters and arrows in the picture to complete attaching your granny squares together
  • Some letters like letter F – H just continue making normal  3 dc clusters like what you have done when you completed your rounds
  • Or when you made your granny squares
  • At the end of letter H, slp st into the ch 1 space you made when you attached the third granny square to the second granny square
  • Continue with 3 dc clusters in each space on the second granny square
  • Repeat the same attaching method by following arrows and letters until you have attached all 5 granny squares together

  • Ch 1 to close and cut off the yarn
  • Repeat the same procedure for the second shoulder strap

square number 2 and 5 to be tied at your back
